Frank Gray, Wilbur Havens and George Thornton, sentenced to serve six months in jail for the Islen rob- j bery, broke out of the Caliente jail on Monday night. Gray and Havens ap- parently made a clear getaway, but Thornton remained in Caliente after , getting out of the jail, apparently changing his mind and giving himself up to Sheriff Culverwell on Tuesday ' morning. Every effort had been made by Sheriff Palmer to keep the men in custody after their last break, but on j account of the poorly equipped jail, ' the prisoners, with only a small old files and a big railroad spike were able to gain their liberty. The men were locked up about five o'clock by deputy Palmer and were in jail when Palmer made his last inspection, but when the officer went to bring the prisoners to breakfast Tuesday morning- early, the break was discovered. The men had filed off the rivets of the cell locks and moved the cell away from the wall, then dug through the wall with the rail spike and crawled crawl-ed to liberty. Every effort is being made by Sheriff Culverwell to again apprehend the prisoners who had plenty of time to make a clean getaway. get-away. Caliente Herald. |
