Show MORE ABOUT FREE SPACE This newspaper commends the stand taken by the Iron County Record of Cedar City in a recent editorial in that paper anent the giving of free space in the paper to political candidates. A newspaper should be just what its name implies im-plies and cannot afford to hand out to its readers a large volume of publicity about some man who desires an, office, all written as news matter. To be sure, newspapers are expected ex-pected to take an active part on one side of an issue, and for that reason, may be expected to keep the rank and file of free publicity out of their columns, in order that when -they do wish to lend their support to a deserving candidate, the articles may sound sincere. When anything other than this sort of boosting is given a candidate, it is in the nature of paid advertising. A newspaper editor can ill afford to spend all his energy in boosting for political candidates. We know candidates candi-dates whom we are going to support, but we are not going to give this support indiscriminantly. |
