SEPTEMBER 11 Milford lias been selected as one of the control points in the International 1 Air Race from Windsor, Canada, to Los Angeles, which will be held from September 8 to 16. From forty to fifty planes will be entered, and on September 11 all of the will make a : stop of thirty minutes on the Milford field. The planes will be of Canadian make and flown by Canadian pilots. i Dudley M. Steele, Chairman of the Contest Committee, California Air Race Association, was in Milford Monday Mon-day and Tuesday, at which time he ' conferred with Lion club members as ! to their willingness to handle the re- 1 ; sponsibilities. The Lions will take J care of the technical duties here, such ; as supplying clerks, timers, and starters, and arranging for a supply of about 600 gallons of gasoline and - 60 gallons of oil. The field here will have to be smoothed out and widened. I . Milford and Salt Lake City are the I only two landing- places in Utah. Be-j Be-j tween here and Los Angeles, the plans will land on the field at Las . Vegas. A stop of thirty minutes is obligatory. Arrangements are being made at most places between the start and finish by local Chambers of Commerce. Lions clubs at Iowa City, Iowa, and at Milford are taking the job in their respective tonws. The California Air Race Association Associa-tion is staging these races, five or six in number. One is from New York to San Francisco, which takes a dif-1 dif-1 ferent route than through here; another an-other one is from Mexico to Los Angeles. The route of the race from Windsor takes through Chicago, Omaha, and Cheyenne. Los Angeles has raised ?200,000 for prize and expenses. ex-penses. I The Milford Lions club believed it would be foolish to pass up the chance offered here . It is 110 idle boast to state that Milford will get more far-reaching far-reaching publicity through this than through anything put over here before. be-fore. The duties of local men "here will I be very exacting. Inefficient timing and servicing of the planes at any field enroute will nullify records made in the race and the details of the work before Milford will be gone over carefully in the intervening time, j , The Lions Club will award a prize for the fastest time made on the lap from Salt Lake City. ' Milford men who have discussed ; the race, believe it to he a stroke of j fortune for Milford and liecau.se of i this, were glad to undertake the re-! re-! sponsibilities. It is thought that the landings and hopping-off again from here will attract people from all over southern Utah. ! |
