S Washington Redskins J toned Baltimore 38-14. David Gentry, Pat Jenkins, Jody Young, Randy Smuin and Josh Reynolds will take part in a Utah All-Star-Japanese All-Star meet Dec. 30. Vernal vo bosv Jdjpconose meetf, Dec. 30 av UE-3S Utah All-Star wrestlers will take on an all-star team from Japan in a freestyle meet Wednesday, Dec. 30 in Vernal at Uintah High School. Vernal will be the only stop for the Japanese team during its wrestling tour of the Western United States of America. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the meet will begin at 7 p.m. The matches will consist of three two minute rounds with one minute rest period between each round. Eleven matches plus three exhibition encounters will be held. Five Uintah wrestlers as well as a Uintah High School graduate will compete in the meet. Uintah's David Gentry will compete in the 114-120 pound class. Gentry captured sixth place in the 1981 state tournament. The Utes' Jeff Good will take part in the 121-127 pound class. Good placed second in the 1980 and third in the 1981 3-A state tournaments. Gentry is a junior and Good is a senior. Both wrestlers are coached by Chuck Henry. Another 121-127 pound contestant will be Stewart Richards,' a Box Elder graduate, who is a two-time state champ. Richards was coached by Lamonie Merkley at Box Elder. Josh Reynolds, a 1981 Uintah graduate, will take part in the 130-136 pound class. Reynolds collected first place in the 98 pound class in 1979 and placed second in 1981 at the state tournament. Reynolds' high school coach was Chuck Henry. Skyline wrestlers John Robbins, 138-144 138-144 and Chad Gallagher, 154-160, will battle Japanese tusslers. Robbins and Gallagher captured state titles and both are coached by Alan Albright. The Uintah Utes will have Randy Smuin and Pat Jenkins at 160-16. Smuin nabbed first place in the 155 pound class in 1981 and placed second in 1980. Smuin is a senior. Jenkins garnered gar-nered first place at 145 pounds in 1981 and is a junior. Smuin and Jenkins are coached by Henry. Viewmont's Todd Larkin will be at 165-171 and Larkin placed third in 1981. Larkin's coach is Steve Sanderson. Another Uintah Ute wrestler, Jody Young, a junior, will also be at 165-171. Kline Bradford of Mountain View, a defending state champ, will be a 178-184. 178-184. Bradford's coach is Fred Rowland. Young is coached by Henry. Three of the top junior high wTestlers from Salt Lake City and three of the top Vernal Junior High wrestlers will clash in exhibition matches. 95 pounder Scott Haile will battle Vernal's Ryan Sid-doway. Sid-doway. J.J. Simon, 105, will take on Vernal's Mike Smith and Chris Hodgkins, 105 or 112, will clash with Vernal's David Gurr or Craig Funk. Jerry Moore, an international officials, of-ficials, who is originally from Ohio, but lives now in Salt Lake City, will be the official in the meet. Gifts will be exchanged ex-changed by the athletes before the meet and Uintah's drill team and flag twirlers will perform. Both the American and Japanese national anthems an-thems will be played. A dinner will be held at the Diamond Hills for the Japanese team by the Vernal Chamber of Commerce. The team will be taken on tour of the Field House of Natural History and the Dinosaur Quarry. Anyone who speaks Japanese and would be interested in being an interpreter is urged to contact Uintah wrestling coach Chuck Henry. The Utah AAU, under the direction of Dee and Jeff Winderlin, are sponsoring the meet. The wrestlers on the Utah team will have first priority on the team that will go to Sweden next summer. The Utah wrestlers were picked by 1-A, 2-A, 3-A and 4-A wrestling coaches. |
