BoQrd approwes $45 miliiori) for two elementary schools The Uintah Board of Education awarded the contract for the construction con-struction of two 18 teaching unit elementary schools to low bidder Broderick and Howell Construction of Orem, Utah. The board opened 21 bids on the two schools last Thursday. Broderick and Howell Construction's bid was $4,529,000 base price on the two schools. There are 18 alternatives on the bidding which will add more to the actual cost Broderick and Howells bid will save the school district $26,000 had the schools been bid separately. According to Ralph Edwards, Edwards Ed-wards and Daniels Associates, Inc. of Salt Lake City and architects for the two projects, the low bid was $85,000 under their estimates. Construction of the two schools should begin "right away" said Superintendent Phil Ellis. Completion date for the two schools, one in the Davis-Naples area and the other in the Lapoint-Tridell area, is Dec. 24, 1982. Both schools will be similar in design and construction with the capacity to accommodate 600 students. In other business Errol Merkley, principal at West Junior High School, gave a favorable report regarding the instructional program at his school. He said the the interest in band at the school is increasing. He also praised the reading lab set up by Mr. Van-Wagoner Van-Wagoner which has stimulated some students to read up to 2,000 words a minute. Representatives of the Uintah High School graduating class of 1982 requested the Board approve a "Grad-Get-Away" trip to Disneyland in June of 1982. Since the activity is scheduled for after graduation, the board felt it should be the decision of the students and their parents regarding participation par-ticipation in the program. The board took no action on the matter. The next board meeting will be Jan. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the District Office.
