Show Winning composers to be named Winners of the 1990 Composers Guild Annual Composition Contest will be announced Nov. 16, 7 p.m. at Guitar City, 470 N. 1100 W. in Centerville, at the Composers Guild sponsored seminar on "The 4-Track 4-Track Recorder Composer's Tool of the Future. ' Tom Carruth, assistant manager of Guitar City, will announce the winners. This year's contest drew entries from 18 states and five foreign countries: Australia, Canada, China, Japan and West Germany, Besides earning cash prizes, winning compositions com-positions are eligible for performance perfor-mance at the Composers Guild Spectacular held the last Tuesday in January. Anyone interested is invited to attend at-tend the contest awards and seminar ' on 4-track recorders. According to Carruth, these versatile little recorders can be one of present-day composers' most valuable tools. Without the expense and space requirements of traditional studio equipment, they can provide many of the same features in the home or in situations where portability is a prime requirement They provide a means of combining sequenced, synthesized and sampled, and computerized com-puterized musical information with acoustical instruments, voices and vocal backups. Editing is facilitated with punch-in, punch-in, punch-out capability, so that it is not necessary to re-record an entire composition to correct minor errors. They can be corrected without redoing re-doing an entire track. Carruth, instructor for the seminar, sem-inar, is one of Utah's most knowledgeable knowl-edgeable electronic music specialists. While earning his master of arts degree from Weber State University, he synthesized the entire orchestral accompaniment for his own live piano performance. He is equally at home as an electronic elec-tronic music specialist, composer, arranger, keyboardist, band musician, musi-cian, recording engineer, and computer com-puter music typesetter. He has been called on to help set up electronic music facilities for all of Utah's universities. Carruth has taught classes at Weber on Finale and Music Prose software for typesetting music. He knows electronic equipment and how to make the best possible use of it Carruth is always one who is willing to shore his knowledge with other musicians, and offer help and encouragement to those just starting out as well as experienced musicians. musi-cians. Composers Guild extends an invitation in-vitation to the public to attend this informative seminar without charge, and to see which Utah composers com-posers will receive awards from 1990s Composers Guild Annual Composition Contest. Composers Guild is also issuing a call for Christmas Music composed compos-ed by area residents to be considered con-sidered for inclusion on the New Sounds for Christmas 1990 concert to be held Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Tenth Ten-th Ward, 420 S. 8th E. Composers must furnish their own top-quality performers. While recorded accompaniments or minus tracks may be used, at least one live performer is required.
