Show Fur Free Friday planned Dear Editor: The fur industry is pouring millions of dollars into an advertising advertis-ing campaign to convince the consumer con-sumer that they have a right to wear fur. The fur industry has also taken it upon itself to make the wearing of fur a freedom of choice issue. Recent Re-cent pro-fur advertisements read: "Some people are opposed to a very basic luxury: Your freedom of choice.' What the fur industry is really worried about is that people are in fact exercising their freedom of choice by choosing not to wear fur. Each of us has that basic freedom of choice. Yet it is important that people peo-ple be given the facts about how animals are killed so that the choice can be made with full knowledge of the animals' suffering involved. Let's face facts. The fur industry is not going to tell you about the brutality of trapping wild animals or the cruelty of raising fur animals on so-called fur "ranches." The fur industry is not worried about freedom, the fur industry is worried about its survival. Fur is a luxury item that comes at a very high price in animal suffering. suffer-ing. For this reason, it simply is no longer "fashionable" to wear fur. Gone are the days of blithely donning don-ning a fur coat without giving a thought to the animal that suffered and died. Today ' s consumer is responsible and accountable, and makes educated choices. Knowledgeable consumers choose kindness and compassion and don't buy or wear fur. I as an individual am committed to ending the cruelty to these animals. Fur imports into the United States have dropped 27 percent since last year. American mink production pro-duction levels are expected to be half of last year. The number of operating mink farms in the United States shows a decline of 7.5 percent. per-cent. Fur-Free Friday is the nation's biggest protest, a day of unity, when all grass-root organizations join together to show our strength. Fur-Free Fur-Free Friday will be held 10 a.m. Nov. 23, at Mam Street and 100 S., Salt Lake City. Edeltraud V. Carter Sandy |
