Show Runners combine sports with smarts Parents who say too much notoriety noto-riety is being given to high school athletics and not enough emphasis is being placed on academic achievements should take a second look at Viewmont High School's cross-country track teams. Yes, both the boys' and girls cross-country teams. Five students-four boys and one girl were recently named to the Utah Cross-Country Academic AU-Star AU-Star Team Five from among 20 chosen from 28 Class 4-A high schools throughout the state. "I've never seen anything like it in 20 years of coaching," said Lynn DuBois, athletic director and coach of both the boys' and girls' crosscountry cross-country teams. "I can't remember any sport or school with so many state academic students. These kids are just great. They are deserving of the honor." Representing the girls ' crosscountry cross-country team is Shauri Carl in g. the only senior on the girls' team thus the only one eligible for all-state academic honors. Honored from the boys' team are Paul Cutler, Ammon Jones, Jason Hess and Trevor Willey, all seniors at Viewmont High. The boys' team finished second in the state this season, runner-up to Bingham by six points. Until the state finals, the Viking crosscountry cross-country team was undefeated, winning win-ning all its dual meets as well as invitational in-vitational meets held throughout the state. Coach DuBois has been coaching boys' and girls cross-country and boys track at Viewmont since 1971. He has captured a combined 23 regional championships and five state titles, including the state girls' basketball championship which he won in 1978-79, the only year he coached the female cage team. His other four state titles came in 1982, 1983 and 1987 in crosscountry, cross-country, and in 1984 in boys' track. Shauri is the daughter of Donald and Shirley Carling of Centerville. She is a member of the National Honor Society with a 3.8 grade-point grade-point average. She is captain of the girls' cross-country team, competes in track and has completed several college advanced placement classes. Jason is the son of Stephen and Vicki Hess of Bountiful. A member of the National Honor Society, he has a 4.7 gpa and is a member of Madrigals, concert choir, seminary council and is an AP student. Ammon is student body vice president, presi-dent, USAC vice president and member of the Madrigals, concert choir and an AP student with a perfect 4.0 gpa. Paul and Jason are co-captains of the cross-country team, and Paul is region champion and fifth-place finisher in the state meet. He holds a 3.95 gpa, is a member of the National Honor Society and has been honored as a National Merit Scholar student. He is senior class vice president, has served two years in the concert choir and is a member of the Madrigals. Trevor maintains a 3.93 gpa and is a member of the National Honor Society. A son of Mike and Terri Willey, Trevor also competes for the Viking track team. r 4 |
