Show Seven Uintah Basketball Officials Design According to an article appearing appear-ing in the March 17 issue of the Vernal Express, seven Uintah Ba- sin basketball officials who worked work-ed games in the local division which is a part of Region Five, 1 the past year, announced by resolution reso-lution they will not officiate during dur-ing the 1955-56 season. The resolution was signed Monday, Mon-day, March 14 by Victor Waite and Dick Upton, Vernal; William Sutteer, Norman Long, Anthon Christensen and Roy Anderson, Roosevelt, and Norman Holmes, Neola. The resolution stated that because the region brought in outside out-side referees to work the recent Region Five play-off at Union High School, and also the Uintah-Union Uintah-Union play-off at Rangely, March 5, they would not be available next year. Region Decides Issue According to Loman F. Hutchings, Hutch-ings, Union High principal, and secretary of the Region Five Board of Managers, the decision to use officials for the play-off tournament tourna-ment was made by the board at the Feb. 28 meeting held at Price. A copy of the minutes was made available to this paper and following follow-ing is a quotation from the minutes min-utes refering to the selection of officials: of-ficials: "Brad Jensen (principal of South Emery High School), moved that the officials for the games be neutral (from some other region than Region 5), and that we ask two officials to handle both games each night." Mr. Hutchings pointed out that preliminary discussion on selecting select-ing officials was very complimentary complimen-tary to the men who had acted as officials during the current season, sea-son, and it was only that the group felt a more harmonious attitude at-titude would be felt if officials from some other region were chosen. "We have enjoyed a fine association with officials in the Uintah division this year, and I feel we- have been very fair with them so far as fees paid and giving giv-ing them games," Mr. Hutchings said in commenting on the local situation. One Did Not Sign The only official who has worked work-ed games this year not signing the resolution was Wallace Ste-phensen Ste-phensen of Duchesne, who announces an-nounces he was not planning to officiate next year. Don Overly, American Fork, and Pony Brooks, Provo, were the officials of-ficials brought in for the Region Five tournament. Two Price referees refer-ees were used at the Uintah-Union play-off game in Rangely. In signing the resolution the seven officials said they felt that after taking the abuse of basketball basket-ball audiences all year for very little pay, they should at least have the opportunity of officiating at the play-off tournaments. They hope that their decision to resign will bring about a "long due" change of ' feeling between the schools and officials. |
