Show Uintah Basin Teams Lose Contests To Schools Who Battled For Title Whistle-Happy "Ref" Slowed Cougars After winning their first game-in game-in the 1955 "B" tournament at Provo, the Union Cougars and Uintah Utes ran into a couple of ball teams that met the final night for the championship, and lost their second rounds. Union lost to Murray 49-38, and Uintah was bested by Cyprus 50-41. For three quarters and six minutes min-utes of their, game against the Murray team, Coach Glen- Allred's Cougars played on even terms with them. With slightly more than two minutes to go in the ball game the score stood at 38-38. 38-38. Then Haun, Healy and Goldman Gold-man took off on a scoring spree that left the Cougars at the wire while they roared past them with 11 points and a ball game. Those who saw the contest were loud in their praise for the valient battle those Black and Gold Cougars Cou-gars put up against one of the finest high school ball teams ever to play in a tournament. A little luck and a few more foul pitches might have told a different story. The Cougars collected only 6 points from the foul line. The half ended 18-15, and the third quarter 28-26 for Murray. Uintah stayed up with the Pirates Pi-rates from Magna the first few minutes of their ball game, but just weren't in the contest the rest of the way as the polished champs rolled to a 44-26 margin at the third quarter. The Cougars were led in their unsuccessful upset over Murray by All-Stater Richard (Packy) Fenn, who dunked 18 points through the hoop. His fast breaks and sharpshooting, along with some power on defense, kept the Cougars Cou-gars in the game. Ken Anderton also came through with some beautiful set-shots from outside to aid the cause. Murray went all the way with their starting five. Four Quick Fouls Something happened in the first three minutes of the third ball -game the Cougars played in the tournament. A whistle-happy official of-ficial (a chap who knew all about Packy Fenn and who watched every ev-ery move he made), virtually had him out of the ball game the first half of the first quarter. Said official of-ficial had called 4 personal fouls on Packy and literally slowed the Cougars down to a walk, allowing Lehi to roll to a 21-7 first quarter quar-ter score. Coach Allred pulled Fenn after the fourth foul and left him on the bench 12 minutes until un-til the second half. Lehi led 33-18 at the half. I After the return of Packy to the lineup the Cougars began to click like the team they were and during the third period scored 14 points against 8 for Lehi. In fact the scoring in the second half was 22 for Lehi and 21 for Union. Again it was the ineffectiveness of the Cougars at the foul line where they hit only . 7 out of 17 that made a lot of difference. Uintah played a fine game against an inspired Marysville team, but just couldn't quite make that third mile as they lost a 56-50 56-50 decision to a well-balanced team from a school that has a high school enrollment of 67 students. stu-dents. Cyprus eked out a slim 1 point victory over Murray to win their first state championship in the history of the school. These two schools, who came from the same division, finished 1-2 in the league race and came to the tourney as the No. 1 and No. 3 ranked teams.
