Show Know Your Schools . . .' The Nature And Purpose Of Education .... Why did the Utah Legislature think it is so important that a statement of aims, purposes, objectives ob-jectives and philosophy of education educa-tion be formulated for the State of Utah? Why are citizens in every district in the state being involved in discussions of the purposes of education? In the past few years many conflicting ideas have arisen concerning the rule of the public schools in public education. Some have felt that in. the objectives of the school were many things that were not the function of the public pub-lic schools. These people have felt the schools should return to the teaching of Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. Others have been anxious an-xious to have the school assume an ever expanding role. Schools have been encouraged to add many services for children in the area of health, personality development, develop-ment, citizenship education, etc. These conflicts exist right here in Duchesne County. It is extremely ex-tremely important that the citizens citi-zens of Duchesne County in this year's Rural Education Conference come to some acceptable statement state-ment of the role the schools of this county should assume in educating ed-ucating our children. The formula tion of such a statement will serve to sharpen our concept of the place of the school in our communities com-munities and serve as a guide to the development of a program by our Board of Education consistent consis-tent with our beliefs.. To help crystalize your thinking in preparation for participation in the conference here is a statement of the nature and purpose of education ed-ucation from the Wilmington, Delaware Del-aware Public Schools: "The function of education is to' build the character and personality person-ality of individuals so that they will achieve their own maximum development, will make their communities com-munities better places in which to live, and will contribute to the enrichment of society generally. "We believe that: "1. Education is a continuous process going on through life. "2.
