Show WSC Landmark By STEPHANIE DeGRAW High above Weber State College grows a living landmark land-mark symbolizing the proud spirit of the campus. The "W on the mountain is composed of 608 sumac trees which were planted in the fall of '81. TWO YEARS ago the 'W' on the mountain was a mere dream to Mike Arave and his fellow studentbody officers. Desiring to leave a permanent remembrance of the class of '80-81. they pursued the project. Mike Arave stated. "The original 'W' on the mountain had become a real eye sore. We wanted to improve it noticeably." After being approved through the 1982 AS WSC council the project then went through the College's President's Council and then through the Institutional Council. Facts were presented to show that sumac trees would be more environmentally sound than concrete on the mountain. LATER WHEN the 'W' project was approved the difficult diffi-cult task of planting the trees began. Many campus organizations organi-zations pulled together while ASW'SC coordinated their efforts. During the summer ASW'SC President Bruce Richeson checked the trees periodically. Many of the '81-S2 and '82-83 ASWSC officers helped replant trees. Presently building and grounds care for the trees. IN A FEW years Weber State will be set apart from other colleges with a full grown living ' W' on the mountain. All of the donors will be honored w ith a plaque in their name in the Union Building Lobby. |
