Show Mm&l season games will decide pairings By TOM HARADLSEN Clipper Sports Editor There are two important football games for Bountiful-area high schools this week, plus the Davis-East Davis-East contest which the Darts want to win to keep their perfect season going and clinch the top seed from the region for the state playoffs that begin next week. HERE IS a brief look at this week's contests: BOUNTIFUL (6-2) at Highland (7-1): Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City, the region's second and third place seeds will be decided by this battle. For the Braves, a win over r " 11 Ul " '.v.- the highly-touted Rams would allow them no worse than a second place finish, and improve their bracketing into state. Bountiful came on strong in the second half last week to fend off Viewmont, 34-13. But the Braves made too many mistakes, and a repeat performance per-formance against Highland could prove costly. The Braves will feel the loss of stellar offense and defensive tackle Steve Badger this week, as Highland's High-land's lines are strong and have generally outmuscled their opposition opposi-tion all year. The Rams have already beaten Olympus and Cedar City this season, two teams which will make state playoff tourna- U ., ...Ml. .1... ,. U 1.11 ,1 " ' ". ments, so they can play. But turnovers tur-novers killed them in their battle with Davis last Thursday. A win by either team is necessary to keep some momentum going as state play begins. WOODS CROSS (2-6) at Viewmont View-mont (3-5): Last year this game, which will decide fourth place in Region Four, would have also carried car-ried with it a state berth. But under restructuring this year of Region Two, only three state berths were granted to Region Four. , So the winner will have to be content with a fourth place finish. Both schools would dearly like to end the year with a win. Viewmont started slowly and came on fast midway through the year, and trailed Bountiful by only a point midway through the third quarter last week before fading at the end. WOODS CROSS, on the other hand, tasted its second straight victory vic-tory with a thumping of East. While the Wildcats two victories have come against weak opponents. oppo-nents. tKey have, nonetheless, helped s;t the stage for a showdown show-down at Viewmont. The key will be how quarterbacks quarter-backs Jason Burningham of Viewmont View-mont and Larry Kimbrell of Woods Cross perform, and the difference will probably be turnovers. The team with the fewest mistakes should come out on top. DAVIS (8-0) at East (1-7):. This should be one of the bigger mismatches mis-matches of the season, and could be decided by halftime. Except for a big upset early on against Judge, the Leopards have not played very well. They scored two quick TD's , on Woods Cross last week, but couldn't hold the lead. The number-one ranked Darts, on the other hand, still have something some-thing to gain from beating East. ' Davis hopes to keep its record unblemished, un-blemished, plus maintain its string of consecutive league wins. The Darts' last league loss was in 1982. Davis also hopes to maintain some momentum going into state playoff action, where the Darts have come up short the last several years. |
