Some of the same jokes aurvrve today that were popular in Europe, even before America was diicovered. . Among the old favorites are send ing a friend to the book store for a "History of Eve's Grandmother," to the drug store for a bottle of pigeon milk (pigeon raisers can prove that pigeons do feed their squabs with milk), to the shoemaker's shoemak-er's for some strap oil, to the hardware hard-ware store for a left-handed monkey mon-key wrench, or a trip miles away to borrow some non-existing article. The empty pocket book, the hat with a brick under it, or the "kick me" sign pinned on a coat tail, fak candy and exploding cigars, all of unknown origin, still exist. |
