Show British Deserve A Loan Former Ambassador Joseph E. Davies suggests that the loan to Great Britain, which is being much discussed, might well be a gift outright and he speaks, we believe, with only the consideration consider-ation of the United States. The fact of the matter is that the British Empire, in its present economic weakness, will have to use artifical controls to keep going. What this country is anxious anx-ious to establish in the world is a free economy that will promote pro-mote international trade on a multi-nation basis. In return for the loan, which will strengthen the British financial position, our English-speaking cousins agree to play ball with us in regard to the development of world trade. There is one other consideration considera-tion for the loan. It concerns national na-tional defense. The British Isles are not ou-tposts of the United States but they serve, even when they act in their own selfish interest, in-terest, to protect us from aggressor aggres-sor nations in Europe. So long as the British Isls maintain their strength as a nation we can count on something like a buffer state between us and any ambitious ambiti-ous dictators. |
