Show BELIEVES IT MM CAN BE DONE BONE chas D adams adam opposed to raising old school building at Pre Prein ent nit carowan parowan Pa rowan an bah utah nov 6 1916 editor time dear si sir I 1 herewith submit a few I 1 thoughts occasioned as a result of the he recent meeting fir of the citizens of par carowan parowan Pa rowan wan the county school board and the county superintendent of schools the people being called together because of a numerously numerous lv r signed petition of the citizens of parowan carowan to reconsider the proposition of raiding to the ground our ii present ent brick school house th the arguments in part as I 1 on understand derst der stand ad them by I 1 the he board and others were first that the present school b building occupied some ground on which the proposed new building would extend if it was placed in an evenly proportioned and balanced position on the east side of the bluck block which they claimed was wag a very desirable location second that if the new building in g was placed further north on tre block the south wing of the build in ing g won would III be so close to the present building as to throw a shad shadow ow or a shade hade the new building and also endanger the new building in case of a fire in the old building the same being considered a fire trap third that the new building with twelve rooms as is 13 now contemplated tem plated would furnish ample room to accommodate bc the elementary grades and house the junior high school with swimming pool gymnasium ete ef and that they would cleat clea 2800 for the building which would be a used sed in the construction st of the new and now to hastily go over the above statements will say A location of a school building north of the present one near main street with the play olay ground west of the building in the park is an ideal location even though it may not be on an evenly and balanced position with reference to the whole length of the block but it old be placed on a balanced position to what is ia known as aa the city park true the south wing would extend within perhaps twenty five feet of the present building and a small portion of it shaded from about 11 a m until about 2 p in As the present building is ia placed diagonally the time likely would be shorter than if otherwise placed As to a fire trap the present building is made of deeply bedded rock foundation with very heavily built brick walls walis the stability of which is conceded even by those in favor of its removal and is considered to be equal or better than any in the state the wide wooden stairway which is said to be the danger part could be replaced with steel and a fire escape built on the outside at the back of the building ste at a moderate cost which would place the building in a remon reasonably ably safe condition As to the third proposition the county superintendent stated that in the parowan carowan schools ten rooms were now occupied and that the fifth grade would have to be divided next year and perhaps one other grade from this it would seem probable that the twelve rooms in the contemplated new building would be occupied with children of the elementary grades next year should thia this prove correct erret the present it seems beems could wry very properly be used to house the J junior high school and as industrial education Is very much approved of atthe at the present time perhaps rooms nioma in the present building would answer the purpose of work shops it has been stated that additions could be made to the new build building ing at a low cost but additions addition sand and new buildings building may require additional bonds or special taxes lo in such auch event the taxpayers of the whole county must be reckoned with I 1 believe the present school building budding can in the future be it used ad in various waya way by the of parowan carowan Pa rowan and I 1 prefer that tatt it remain a 1 I baut and let the future determine and ampro approve a not only my pos pon won but that of the majority the people of this city the th e meeting ir referred to adjourned without phout final vote being taken but was laid upon the table and thought there by some to remain and die a natural death by others other to be called up and a final vote taken there was a very large number 0 of f I 1 the he people present and if a final vote had been taken before the PP peo ale began to leave the room a fair expression could have been reached in conclusion let me say bay I 1 be lieve the board has approved of the plans for the new building which is appreciated led III by the people and they can if they so wish select a suitable site on the ten acre lot without interfering ter fering with the present building the statement of mr thorley a member of the board that the new building could cc id be built independent md berid t of the old III one ne under the contractile is 13 duppre appreciated c bated respectfully respectful 1 CHAS D ADAMS |
