Show Utah Art Council Announces Contest Deadline for entry in the Utah Arts Council's Twenty-Fifth Twenty-Fifth Annual Original Writing Wri-ting Contest is February 15, 1983. Manuscripts must be postmarked by midnight on the closing date in order to be eligible for the competition. competi-tion. All entries should be addressed to the Utah Arts Council, Literary Competition, Competi-tion, 617 East South Temple. Salt Lake City, UT 84102. The contest is open to all legal residents of Utah of any age. One entry only may be submitted in each class by each contestant, and winners of first or second place cash awards in the contest of the year immediately preceding (1981-82) are not eligible to compete for prizes in the class in which they received the award, although they may compete in any other class. The Council has offered Utah writers an annual creative writing competition for a quarter of a century. This important competition provides an avenue of exposure and acknowledgment acknow-ledgment to professional and amateur writers in the state. The Utah Arts Council offers this opportunity for proper recognition of works of merit. It is continually working through the Utah State Legislature to provide challenging prizes and competent com-petent judges, so that writers cannot only bring attention and prestige to the state, but also set standards of excellence excel-lence in many fields. Cash prizes ranging from $200.00 - $1000.00 are offered in the following categories: novel; book-length book-length collection of poetry; book-length collection of short stories; poetry -serious; light verse; short story; juvenile book; young adult book; and magazine article. In ' addition, . the contest awards a $5000.00 publication prize to one of the first-prize winners of classes calling for book-length book-length submissions. The prize is designed specifically to assist with the publication of the chosen work.
