Show Fire Turns Residents Out In the Cold Six Park City residents were left without a place to stay last Wednesday morning following a fire at a Norfolk Ave. apartment house. Park City Fire Marshall Herb Johnson estimated the damage to the frame house at 835 Norfolk at $100,000. He said he based the figures on the cost of replacing the damaged portions of the residence that had been separated into three apartments. apart-ments. Johnson said it is his understanding all the occupants occu-pants of the apartment house have now found places to live. During the course of fighting fight-ing the fire, Johnson said volunteers made an extra effort to save personal belongings from smoke and fire damage. "We gathered up belongings belong-ings in the1 apartments and covered them with protective tarps." he said. The fire, that was reported at 11:22 a.m. Dec. 22, was caused by a chimney that was either blown or knocked down the night before, according to Johnson. "The chimney either blew down during the night or was knocked over by ice sliding off the roof of the residence," Johnson said, "The chimney was leaning against the side of the house when occupants of a lower unit lit a fire in their woodburning stove the morning mor-ning of the fire." Johnson said the defective chimney started the exterior siding on fire and the flames soon burned through to interior walls and up into the attic of the house. "Fire damage was mainly isolated in the upper units." he said. Sixteen volunteer firefighters fire-fighters and five pieces of equipment responded to the alarm. Johnson said the volunteers controlled the blaze in a little over an hour despite the difficulty locating the fire inside walls and under remodelled roof lines. "The volunteers did an excellent job," he said, "they contained the fire to the upper floor and prevented prevent-ed it from spreading to adjoining property. The extensively damaged top floor apartment was rented by Dave Smith and Loren Weisman. The house is owned by Bob Ward of Salt Lake. ' f ; ' ' A K""" A .
