Show Skier Shannon Nobis gives retiring coach Dick Stoner proper send-off by Dave Adler Shannon Nobis, one of the Park City Ski Team's chief sparkplugs throughout the season, glowed again last weekend as she paced her teammates with a first- and a second-place finish in the Inter-mountain Inter-mountain Division's Junior III-V championships at Solitude. In winning the girl's slalom on FYiday in weather that saw the mercury climb into the 70s and snow turn to mush, Shannon gave her retiring coach, Dick Stoner, a farewell present. Stoner, 38, who has coached for 10 years and produced numerous champions, has decided to retire from the coaching ranks and pursue other endeavors. "I've had two knee operations and need another," said Stoner. "My doctor asked me, 'Dick, isn't there anything else you can do?' I've really enjoyed these years here with the team and Bob Marsh, and I'm going to miss it, but you reach the point in life where it's time to move on." Shannon, who has finished first or second all year long in the Jin (ages 12-13) group, defeated her archrival, arch-rival, Picabo Street, of Hailey, Idaho for the slalom title on Friday. Park City's Essie Doilney and Jill Maasberg Pnished third and fourth respectively. Heather Circo, only a JIV (ages 10-11), finished eighth. Star Clark and Jennifer Vance, also JIV racers, finished 14th and 16th respectively. Sheryl Sarazine of ParkWest finished 25th. In the girl's Jm-IV sla'om on Saturday, both Shannon and Picabo failed to negotiate the huge ruts on the second run and didn't finish. "Those two have had a great rivalry all year. They really go after each other," said Stoner. After the first run, Picabo was first and Shannon was second, and nobody else was close. "They were trying so hard against each other that they just went off the course on the second run," he said. "But I think it's better to try to win and not finish than to finish low and not have a chance to win." Although Shannon did not finish, her teammates were there to pick up the slack. Maasberg, Doilney, Hilary Felton and Ali Salomon finished second through fifth, respectively, behind the winner, Muffy Davis of Sun Valley. Heather Circo, Star Clark and Jennifer Vance were seventh, 12th and 16th. Sheryl Sarazine of ParkWest finished 19th.
