Show High school soccer club is breaking even On the heels of a 3-3 tie with Waterford a week ago, the Park City High school soccer club traveled to St. Joseph yesterday in search of its second win of the season. Miners' coach Jesse Schaub said that the tie with Waterford could "come back and haunt us and keep us out of the regional playoffs. We had a 3-0 lead and I started to send in some substitutes and probably let them play longer than I should have." The Miners were unable to regain their earlier momentum and fell to 1-1-1 on the year. They opened with a 4-3 victory over East High School, then lost to Rowland Hall. But Schaub and his team are hardly discouraged by the rough start. "We're playing very well together," said Schaub. "We've got a great nucleus, but they need more time together." He said he will make some lineup I changes this week in his co-ed team. "Ours is a co-ed league, but the other teams haven't played any girls. We've got some very good girls on our team and a lot of good boys. From now on I'm going to field the best 11 players girl or boy." Schaub faces a familiar dilemma for a high school coach: Should his goal be to win or to spread around the playing time? "I want to handle this as a varsity sport," he said. "But I want to keep the younger kids involved. I don't want them to become discouraged. Besides, we'll be depending on them later." Schaub is upbeat about the season. "We've got a solid group of kids and the majority are experienced. experienc-ed. We'll be all right," he said. After the road trip, the Miners return home to host Rowland Hall, Waterford and St. Joe over the next three weeks. I |
