It would be difficult to single out any one player as having the most impact on the game for the Miners. It was as though they each took turns contributing in key situations. In the first quarter, the Patriots rode the hot shooting of junior Lambson in rushing to a 6-0 lead. The Miners then traded a couple of baskets on a jumper by King and a layup by Mullen, while Lambson connected from the outside. Park City Ci-ty then tightened the defense and got hoops from Tatum, Keye t and another from King courtesy of a steal by Keye to knot the score at W The Patriots led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. t J Park City outscored the Patriots 10-4 early in the second quarter to take a 22-18 lead. The Miners threatened to run away with the ball game when they started the second half by building a 34-28 lead, but the pesky Partiots had different plans. Derek Sachal hit a 20-footer and then Lambson connected con-nected twice to pull within 36-32. ' King hit a foul shot and then scored oh'a fast break to help the Miners - end the quarter on top at 39-34. It appeared it would be a dogfight to the end, until the Patriots got cold with about four minutes left to the game. They could not buy a bucket. The Patriots had been employing a ' full-court press since early in the fourth quarter. And while the "Strategy caused turnovers and easy 1 scoring opportunities, it also took its toll on the players. Layups became a challenge and jump shots were out of the question. ::. ' ;" "We had some layups, some foul shots and couldn't connect. If you can't make those you can't expect to I win," said Jeff Lambson, Patriots rhead coach. "The Miners were C- screening well and we didn't adjust.,; They also shot better than they did r last year." Indeed they did. The Miners shot less than 50 percent from the charity stripe last year and in the final quarter they managed to hit 10 of 16 foul shots while pulling away from Mount Vernon. Park City was able to connect on five of nine foul shots giving giv-ing them a 13-point lead with 27 seconds left. "Our kids hung in there well, considering con-sidering the averse conditions as far as the physical things happening under the basket," Willard said, "They (Patriots) were a very physical team and although they did get some good shots they also took some very poor ones. ;' "It seemed their strategy was to , throw the ball up and try to get the rebound for the easy shot inside," he added. "However, many of their second se-cond efforts, although in close range, were shot off balance." " Park City will begin 2-A play Oct. 6 when they travel to Grantsville.
