Unless otherwise noted, events listed below will take place in Salt Lake DANCE What's a holiday season without ballet West's "The Nutcracker"? It is presented at the Capitol Theatre, 50 West 200 South. The perfomances are Dec. 14-29 at 7 p.m. Matinees at 2 p.m. play on Dec. 26-31. A Dec. 24 show is at noon. This schedule excludes Sunday. MOVIES "Kagemusha" ends the Akira Kurosawa festival at the Salt Lake City Library. In his last (to date) film, Kurosawa tells the tale of a 16th Century thief who is spared execution if he will become the ! "kagemusha" (double) of a recently-dead warlord. The film plays at the library, 209 East 500 South on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. Admission is $2.50. -"Sitting Pretty" continues the Clifton Webb Festival on Dec. 14. Robert Young and Barbara "Delia Street" Hale play two young parents in a small town who need a babysitter. But the person who answers their ad is prickly but lovable genious Lynn Belvedere (Webb). The film plays at 2 p.m. (for 25 cents) and at 7 p.m. (for 50 cents) at the Salt Lake City Library. ( At the Blue Mouse: Try a little tenderness with "Dr. Strangelove;" "Caligula" is a notorius X-rated debauch with Malcolm McDowell and Peter O'Toole; "Life of Brian" looks at the guy born in the manager next door; and "The Ruling Class" presents Peter O'Toole as Jesus ChristJack the Ripper. The Mouse is at 260 East 100 South. Shiver at the monsters on display at the Utah Media Center. The 1933 "King Kong" with Fay Wray is the first and best of them all. It plays on Dec. 14 (9:30 p.m.), Dec. 15 (5:30 and 9:30 p.m.) and Dec. 16 (7:30 p.m.) Next, put on your Three-D glasses and greet the Creature From the Black Lagoon, who slimes out of the Amazon to menace an archaeological expedition. The film plays on Dec. 14 (7:30 p.m.), Dec. 15 (2:30 and7:30 p.m.), and Dec. 16 (5:30 and 9:30 p.m.). General admission for each film is $2.50 or $3.50 for the double feature. Films are shown in the auditorium of the Salt Lake Art Center, 20 South West Temple. The Clown Prince of rock, Frank Zappa, appears at the Salt Palace. On Dec. 15 in an 8 p.m. show. Reserved seats at $12.50 are on sale at Datatix outlets. The Zephyr Club presents Albert Collins and the Ice Breakers (Dec. 13-15), the Tempo Timers (Dec. 16-17), and Norton Buffalo (Dec. 19-20). The club is at 301 South West Temple. The Celebrity Showroom features Mel Torme (finishing his engagement on Dec. 13-15) and Connie Francis (beginning hers on Dec. 19). It's in the Elks Building at 139 East South Temple. THEATRE Consider yourself welcome to "Oliver," presented by Park City Performances at the Egyptian Theatre. It plays Dec. 13-15 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $4.50 and $5.50. Utah's foremost Dickens interpreter, Michael Bennett, presents a reading of "Christmas Carol" on Dec. 17, 19, 21 and 22 at the Art Barn, 54 Finch Lane. Performances are at 8 p.m. For ticket information call 581-9787. Promised Valley Playhouse features Victor Herbert s "Babes in Toyland," playing Wednesday through Saturday through Dec. 24. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. at 132 South State. "84 Charing Cross Road" is a dramatization of a long correspondence between an American author (Margaret Crowell) and an English bookstore owner (Gene Pack). Plays Thursday-Saturday j through Dec. 22 (8 p.m.) at Theater 139, 138 South Second East. i ! ETCETERA ! -The Kimball Art Center features batik artist Amos Amit in an exhibit through Jan . 3. KAC also features its Christmas Boutique in the Lower Gallery this month. Natalie Holder and Alexis Brill will read their original poetry at the Upstairs Gallery and Espresso Cafe, 562 Main, Park City, on Friday, Dec. 14 and Saturday, Dec. 15 at 9 p.m. "Once Upon a Starry Night" at the Hansen Planetarium, 15 South State, plays weekends (11 a.m., 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m.), Saturdays (2, 4: 40 and 7) and Sundays 2 and 4 : 30 p.m. ) . The children's show "Zoom a Little Zoom" plays at Hansen at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by "Science Sorcery" at 11:45 a.m. The Hansen Laserium presents the best of The Police, Pink Floyd, N David Bowie and others. Performances are Thursday (9 p.m.), Friday (9 and 11 : 15 p.m.) and Saturday (3, 9 and 10: 15). The Salt Lake City Library hosts a glass exhibit by local artists Bob Baird, Lily Havey and Sally Wolfe-Tetting. The exhibit runs from Dec. 2 to 27, in the Atrium Gallery of the third floor. The library is at 209 East 500 South. "Christmas on Ice" at Triad's new outdoor rink features Santa Claus, elves and local figure skaters all on ice. It will be performed Dec. 14-15, 21-22 and 24 at 2 p.m. and Dec. 16 and 23 at 7 p.m., tor free. Byron Allen, former host of "Real People," is the featured comic at the all-comedy nightclub Cartoons, 2201 South Highland Drive (behind Fashion Gal ) . Allen plays on Dec. 13-16.
