Show Accident takes life of Park City man Lifelong Park city resident Michael Byer was killed Dec. 5 in an industrial accident at the landfill just outside the city limits when his dump truck apparently crushed him as he was working on a manual release underneath the vehicle. Detective Seargent Rob Berry of the Summit County Sheriff's office said they received a call at 4:18 p.m. which had originated with fellow Eppley Construction worker Scott Middlesworth. "Middlesworth got to the dump at approximately 4:05 and saw Byer trapped underneath his truck. He went to the highway and flagged down a snowmobiler who actually called the accident in," Berry said. Byer had been working in Deer Valley at the Pine Inn hotel site until 3 p.m. Wednesday when he left to take a load of fill to the dump. E.M.T.S found Byer dead at the scene of the accident. He was taken to the Holy Cross clinic where the official pronouncement was made by Dr. Robert Winn. "There was nothing at all I could do," said Dr. Winn. "I could see this was a case for the medical examiner's office, so I set about to contact the family and be with them." Mike Byer's death came just three weeks after the death of his father, Frank. Mike Byer is survived by his wife Carmella and seven children. (See obituary on page A15.) Olive Eppley of Eppley Construction Construc-tion said Byer had worked there since the early 1970s. "He was just like one of the family; we are all devastated by the tragedy." Byer was a supervisor for trucking equipment at the time of his death. A bank account for the family has been set up at First Security Bank where donations are being taken. Funeral services for Byer were held last Saturday. |
