Yes, the Town Races begin Monday, Dec. 17 with the qualifying race on Clementine at the Park City Ski Area. This year's race slate consists of seven races, the last on April 1 . Katheryn Hadfield, who is coordinating coordi-nating the races this year along with Frank Elliot, outlined the details. The entry fee has been raised to $7 per race and may be paid by sponsoring businesses. There are two ways a person can enter. First there are teams, each of which will have between three and five racers. At least one team member must be a female. Second, for non-affiliated types, a person can enter as an individual. Hadfield said an individual must enter and finish six of the seven races to qualify for the final point standings. If all seven races are run, the worst time can be dropped. For those who don't want to race six times, there also will be rankings for each race. Team points will count only on the final six races. Again this year Michelob light will be the major sponsor of the Town Races. Michelob Light has made two changes in the after-race party at the Rusty Nail. First, participants will only receive two free beers, each additional beer will cost 25 cents, with the money being donated to the Special Olympics. Now before you get mad, listen to this. On those two free coupons you receive, you will write your name. Then those coupons will be put in a hat. One coupon will be drawn during each party. These seven winners' names will then go into a larger hat at the end of the year, mixed with similar drawing winners from other races around the country sponsored by Michelob Light. From that larger hat one name will be drawn. For what? A seven-day trip to Switzerland for two. Still mad? Other sponsors this year are Dynastar skis and Cole Sport. As in past years, there are brackets for different levels of racing expertise. First is the C bracket for people who have really never raced before. Then comes the B grouping. Both of those groups, along with the cross country racers, will start from the dogleg on Clementine. Starting at the top of the run will be the more experienced the A, Pro, and Veteran classes. Last year's largest race crowd turned out Feb. 6, a total of 315 skiers. To register, as a team or an individual, for each race, participants partici-pants must go to the race window at the Park City Ski Area on the Saturday or Sunday morning before the race. Sunday noon is the absolute deadline, Hadfield said, and anyone past that time will be too late to partake. Here is this year's Town Race schedule. Dec. 17 (qualifying race where no team points will count), Jan. 21, Jan. 28, Feb. 11, Feb. 25, March 4 and April 1. Of interest to the smaller racers of Park City, here is the schedule for the remaining three Kids' Town Races. There will be one each month: Jan. 13, Feb. 10, and March 3. It costs $5 for the midgets to race. For more information about either the Town Races or the Kids' Town Races call the Park City Ski Area Race Department at 649-8111. I |
