Show Nine county water systems cited for violations Nine water systems in Summit County have been singled out by the state for failing to notify their customers that they did not meet state and federal drinking water standards during the third quarter (July through September) of 1984. "Each of the systems listed was sent a letter following the third quarter of 1984. The letter informed them that their system appeared to be in non-compliance," said Gayle Smith, director of the Bureau of Public Water Supplies. ' 'The systems then have 30 days to either correct their deficiency or notify their customers of the violation and why it occurred," he added. The managers of this quarter's non-complying systems have neither contacted the Utah Department of Health nor notified their customers. Smith said seven of the systems were listed for failing to sample the j water for bacteriological quality. All community water suppliers with a r resident population are required to sample monthly. Non-community '. systems such as campgrounds and i rest areas are required to sample at least once every calendar quarter. Included in that category were: Camp Pinecliff, Cannon Property Water, Hidden Haven Campground, High Valley Water Co. Mountain Water, Pine Ranch and Pine Springs Island. Two other Summit County systems, Aspen Acres Corporation and Sulphur Campgrounds, were listed because their bacteriological quality did not meet nationwide bacteria drinking water standards. Smith said this indicates thai the risk of systems is unacceplably high. "We're pleased with the public's acceptance of our efforts to assure ', that all public drinking systems meet safe drinking standards," Smith said. "While the majority of Utah's 1200 water systems meet water quality and construction require- i ments, there continue to be some ' systems where we still haven't been able to convince the management of the importance of complying with standards." The public is urged to contact the ; management of the water system if the is listed to find out why they weren't notified and what is being done to correct the problem. The Utah Department of Health, Bureau of Public Water Supply may be contacted by writing to 560 South 300 East, Room 230, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84111, or calling 533-4207. |
