Show Ken McCarthy is on a roll By Nan Chalat Ken McCarthy is hot this year. Two weekends ago he set a new Brighton-to-Park City overland record, rec-ord, and last weekend he solidified his lead over the Men's Open division in the Wasatch Citizens' Series. . On Saturday McCarthy completed 15 kilometers on the Mountain Dell Golf Course in 47 . minutes, 37 seconds more than two minutes " ahead of second-place finisher Jim Miller. "That means he is skiing just over three-minute kilometers and that is as fast as any of the Utah citizen racers have skied in my recollection," recollec-tion," said Dave Hanscom, one of the coordinators of the nordic race series. The race at Mountain Dell was the third in the six-race Wasatch Citizens' Series. Jim Miller's time in the Men's Open (expert) division was 49:41. Del Despain finished third with a time of 50 :29. Parkites Jeff Newsom and Barry Abramson finished sixth and tenth respectively in the 14-man division. McCarthy's sister Kathy led the Women's Open (expert division). Though not quite as fast as her brother, Kathy still managed to ski the 15 kilometers two minutes faster than her opponent Marie Schwartz. McCarthy's time was 57:57, Schwartz's was 60:22. Ellen Gibson finished third in 61:52. And Jeri Simms was fourth with a time of 62:01. In the Men's IV division (ages 35-49) Dan Gibson ousted Dave Hanscom from first place. Gibson rounded 10 kilometers in 34:46. Hanscom's time was 35:07. Dean Anderson finished third in 35:56 and Rich Groth was fourth (36:33). i The Men's in division (ages 19-34) . also ran two laps on the five-kilometer course. Jeff Stuart led the 33-man division. His time was 35:15, which only gave him a 15-second lead over Christoph Schork who finished in second place. John Rivoll was third and finished with a time of 35:51. The Park City entrants in this division, in addition to Schork, included Ed Masters in fourth place (36:45), Jim Rasmussen in sixth place (36:58) and Lee Shea in seventh place (38:06). In the Women's IV class (ages 35-49) Marit Glenne completed 10 kilometers in 42:03 for first place. Karen Korfanta was second, finishing finish-ing in 44 .08. Marsha Groth was third (44:42) and Jessie Whitmore was fourth (45:17). Madonna Harris earned top honors in the Women's in division (ages 19-34). The women raced 10 kilometers, which Harris completed in 39:29. Roxanne Toly was hot on her heels and finished in 40:11. Leslie Howa was third (48:26) and. Bev Gray was fourth (50:17). The Men's and Women's V division (over 50 years old) attracted only four entrants. Trudy Healy, the only member of her class, won first place with a time of 69:16 for 10 kilometers. Ted Sundquist led Lars . Olavson and B.K. Seely with a time of 45:20. . i -""In" the" 'younger categories Greg ' Hanscom won the Men's I Division (under 14 years old). He finished three kilometers in 16:14. Eric Fritz led the 14-18-year-old boys by finishing five kilometers in 18:12. Among the girls Kim Hooper won the under-14 division (21 :21 for three kilometers) and Ellen Seeley was the winner (and only entrant) in the 14-18-year-old division. Robin Perkins topped the Men's Novice division, skiing five kilometers kilo-meters in 22:05. Diane Klier led the Women's Novice division, which also raced five kilometers. Her time was 26:39. "The key to winning this race was wax," said Hanscom, who added that the temperature hovered right at freezing during the race. Hanscom said he settled on a purple klister binder with an overlay of purple hard wax. The next race in the Wasatch Citizen's Series will be held at Wasatch Mountain State Park on Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. |
