Show P.C. women clean up in Colorado Ride & Tie by Handy Hanskat It was as if they were running home over the hills of Park City, warming up for the upcoming Levi's Ride & Tie, because 10 area runners and riders made a trip to Colorado for a Ride & Tie and mopped up. The local women swept the top three team spots, while the men took first and third. The event this past Saturday was the Colorado Ride & Tie and was held at Beaver Meadows, a secluded spot outside Fort Collins. According to Bev Gray, one of the local standouts, 17 teams were compet- ing, with $350 up for grabs to the top overall team. And it was the tandem of Ron Nehring of Park City and Howard Ingle of Salt Lake who grabbed that jackpot. Their time of 2 :33 won the Colorado event for the third straight time, a feat worthy of giving them the travelling trophy to retire to their home turf. Another Park City duo, Jim Orme and Terry Orme came in at 2:57, third in the two-man teams, and fifth overall. But it was in the women's ranks where the locals really cleaned house. In first was the team of Gray and Debra Pack in a blazing time of 2:44, third fastest overall. They were followed in second place (women's) by Vicki Ross and Julie Chambers Haren at 3:11. Rounding out the Park City sweep was the team of Marit Glenne and Julie McKay at 3:15. Gray noted that McKay and Glenne were not able to use the horse they had trained with because it failed to pass the pre-race veterinarian's exam, so they were forced to use a friend's horse which they were not familiar with. For Gray and Pack the win was a return to form. Gray said the pair is just getting back into Ride & Tie for the first time since Pack broke her leg two years ago. Gray said the Colorado event was the final competition in the area before the Aug. 19 Levi's Ride & Tie, an international competition. "It was a training run for most of us," Gray said. |
