Show Moose on the loose It was to have been Claudia Appling's last trip with the local group known as the Night Riders. But it almost turned into a trip to the hospital when the horse she was riding was charged by an irate female moose. According to Michele Thille, another member of the group, they were riding on the Hi Ute Ranch property south of Interstate 80 when Appling got the fright of her life. She said they had passed within about 40 feet of the cow moose, which was standing in a pond, when the animal took off after them. Thille said the moose easily caught up with the lead horse, which was being ridden by Appling, and cut her off The horse reared, throwing Appling to the ground. Thille said that Appling suffered a fractured vertebra in the fall and also bruised two ribs. But no ambulance was called. "She rode out because she's a Night Rider," Thille smiled. Appling, a former Park City resident and well-known singer in bands such as Alias, is recuperating at her mother's house in Oregon. Frank Rino, manager of Hi Ute Ranch, said there was a reason for the cow's hostility. "She's a little aggressive because she has a baby this year," he said. The moose is so familiar to Hi Ute employees that they've even given her a name: Jenny. |
