Show Alvarez to attend Demo Convention I Will Walter Mondale take the Democratic nomination in a cake walk? Will Gary Hart or Jesse Jackson stand in his way? And who will be selected as vice president? One Park City resident will be in San Francisco when these questions are answered. Matt Alvarez will travel to the Democratic National Convention, July 15-20, as an alternate delegate from Utah. The total delegation, he told the Record, consists of 27 delegates and six alternates. Of the delegates, 12 to 14 are for Hart, six support Mondale and the rest are uncommitted, said Alvarez. As an alternate, Alvarez is a stand-by, literally. He can be in the convention hall, but he cannot sit on the floor as his party's delegate. If a delegate does not appear to conduct business, for whatever reason, an alternate is summoned to fill his place. Because Alvarez is committed to Gary Hart, in the early stages of the convention he would be called to fill in only for a Hart delegate. "But if you are released, you can go for anybody," he said. That can happen hap-pen in two instances if Hart voluntarily releases his delegates, or if voting goes beyond the first ballot." This is Alvarez's first national convention, though he has gone to eight or nine of the state party conventions held every other year. He has also served as Democratic party chairman for the county, and run for county commission in 1982. Alvarez said he's looking forward for-ward to watching the platform work at the convention. And he will attentively watch the results of that first ballot. "I'm a student of political science," he said. And as far as he's concerned, this is an important impor-tant chance to see the process at work. |
