Show Mammoth says it's tops THEkl TRAIL Vail It looked like a junior NATO Summit as former President Gerald Ford played host at the third annual World Forum in Vail. Other famous formers at the meeting were Helmut Schmidt, West German Chancellor from 1974 to 1982; James Callaghan, British prime minister from 1976 to 1979; and Malcolm Fraser, Australian Austra-lian prime minister from 1975 to 1983. Other guests included U.N. Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick and Trade Representative William Brock. TAHOE WORLD Lake Tahoe A Place County grand jury has alleged that low morale at the Tahoe City substation has hurt law enforcement in the area. But Chief Deputy Ed Presley said the report is unfair and inaccurate. "I don't care how low the morale has gotten, these people still go out and do their jobs." he said. The jury claimed the morale problem has been caused by "unfair and possibly illegal" disciplinary-actions. disciplinary-actions. Two sheriff's officers have appealed to the Civil Service Commission for discipline given to them. THE ASPEN TIMES Aspen While local streams may be flooding now, the city of Aspen will face raw water shortages in the future during critical dry years. A Raw Water Supply Update report said the shortages will be limited to minimum streamflows and irrigation, irriga-tion, if conditions don't get worse than the last drought year of 1977-78. The report suggested ways to reduce expected shortages, such as using sanitation waste water to irrigate the golf course and other systems; purchasing additional water wa-ter rights in local streams; and undertaking a program to reduce leakage in the system. J2SJt Mammoth Lakes Is Mammoth Lakes the highest city in America? The town manager, Marcus Christensen, was asked by the town council to look into the matter. Local boosters are enthusiastic because while the village itself is only 7,860 feet, the boundaries include Mammoth Mam-moth Mountain, at 11,052. In his early research, Christensen has found tht Leadville, Colorado claims the high-city title, at an elevation of 10,152 feet. And Brian Head, in Utah, claims it includes a mountain at 11,000 feet. At this point, it's clear Mammoth can claim the title of highest city in California, said the Review. -jiouiraiii KetchumSun Valley Ketchum, which already has two sister cities, is making contact with a third. The town is Koboldo, a mountain community of 4,000 in the Soviet Union. The two were brought together by the Ground Zero Pairing Project, an Oregon group that has paired 22 Idaho cities with towns of similar climate and geography in the Soviet Union. Local ninth-grade students sent a packet to Koboldo, including pictures pic-tures and letters, a patch from the Nordi,-; Ski Patrol and copies of the Mouniain Express and Sun Valley Magazine. In return, they received letters and postcards from Koboldo. Ketchum's two other sister cities are Tegemsee, West Gemany and Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy. Jackson Hole News Jackson Hole Reconstruction on the Jackson Lake Dam might be impeded because of two little snails. Two aquatic snails apparently only found in sections of the lake, are on a list of 1,000 invertebrates which might qualify under the Endangered Species Act. One, the Elk Island Snail, is a brown creature about 332nds of an inch long. The second, the Jackson Lake Snail, is about half an inch in diameter. Both species are found under rock and gravel. The project includes a proposal to quarry rock and gravel from the lakebed. If either fell under the Endangered Species Act, work on the dam could be halted for a study to determine whether the project will hurt the creatures. |
