The conference is made up of mock elections, meetings, and conventions to give attending women a chance to learn what it's like to be a political official in local, state , or national government. The two Park High juniors were excited at being chosen for the conference. Simmons who lives in Summit Park, says "It's a chance to learn how laws are made." Murnin, Mur-nin, a Snyderville resident, said she wanted "The opportunity to learn more . about our government and how it's run.". . Both girls claim women should get more involved in government and politics. Simmons said "A woman's viewpoint is different from a mans' and most of the laws that have been passed by men are affecting women. Women should have more say in passing those laws." Looking to the future, the girls said they hoped the conference would help them become better leaders. They claim more women should take the responsibility of running and supporting women for political office. When asked why she thought there weren't many female politicians, Simmons offered .''most people may not think women are as capable (as men) or have as much time."" Murnin added, "Women should have the right to be in politics." Both girls said they felt "Women should have the right to do more with their lives than just stay home with their families." The upcoming conference may be a chance for Murnin and Simmons to do just that. Some of the topics sure to come up in Cedar City they said include abortion, the Equal Rights Amendment and the MX. 1 - j " . - V ' i Charleen Murnin and Lisa Simmons |
