Show Democrats Rail Republicans The Republican-dominated State Legislature received some sharp criticism today at the Summit County Democratic Demo-cratic Convention. Cyndi Woodbury of the Committee for a Democratic Legislature, speaking at the Veterans Memorial Bldg. in Park City, condemend the Republicans for failing to address the needs of the State and its people. "The Republican budget fails not only to address our immediate needs, but takes from us the opportunity to protect our future," Cyndi Woodbury said. She cited the decision made behind closed doors in caucus to throw out the Governor's budget in favor of working from the 1980-81 base as one way the Republicans avoided tough programmatic decisions, decis-ions, opting instead for arbitrary and often unfair across-the-board cuts in education, edu-cation, public assistance, medicaid, and other State programs. Republican legislators were also characterized as "careless "care-less and nonchallant" in their approach to important legislation. "Passage of the wrong version of the State Firewords Act and the ineptly written H.B. 164, which was supposed to reduce residential property tax assessments by 20 percent, but which 'accident-ly' 'accident-ly' reduced school fund revenues by $6 million, are two examples of Republican incompetence," Cyndi Woodbury said. She concluded that the greatest failure of the legislature legis-lature was its rejection of the comprehensive severance tax policy and the refusal to even consider other vital components of a growth management strategy. Convention Conv-ention delegates were told that the failures of the recent session "emphasize more than ever the need of the Democratic Party to organize itself and regain control." The Committee for a Democratic Legislature was formed in 1978 to provide research, campaign, and fund raising assistance to Democratic legislative candidates. can-didates.
