"""" " s . ..... : by Jim Smedley Record Staff The Park City Muckers flexed their muscles on the last Sunday in May handily defeating the University of Utah rugby team 26-0. High winds plagued both teams's kicking game but captain Mucker Rick Phaler said he was pleased with the team's performance in registering regis-tering its first shutout of the year. ''"l think it was great. We had quite a few guys doing well," Phaler said. "We're right where we want to be." Dave Sundquist, president of the Muckers side, said although the . wind was bothering the play of both teams it gave an advantage-to advantage-to the Muckers because they -were the more experienced team. The game was a defensive battle for the opening 20 minutes of the first half. Both teams pushed each other back and forth between the 25 yard lines. "We were playing a little sloppily at first but we were just over-playing them," Sundquist said. "Although we handn't scored we weren't panicking. We stud to the game plan and won: them down." Park City " wore them down" to their own five yard line with about 15 minutes left to the" half for their first score. Blackie Jones dubbed an awesome defensive player by Phaler, stole the ball on a University lineout and scored. Bruce Reid missed the kick and the Muckers led 4-0. Minutes later with the ball at a mid-field lineout, Phaler passed to Don Sturgis who scampered to the 40 yard line. He was stopped but not tackled as John Lundquist held him up. Tom Lauder and Doug Shewmaker kept the University Univer-sity players away from Sturgis and eventually Phaler Pha-ler came up with the ball again. "I passed to Scotty (Thomson) (Thom-son) and he ran it to the 25, passed to Eric Smith who ran a couple of yards before handing off to Jeff 'Shoeless Evil' Wallace," Phaler said. "A guy grabbed him and only got his shoe. He ran it in from there."" Reid made his kick this time boosting the Muckers to a 10-0 lead. Phaler said 'Shoeless' Wallace Wal-lace stood out in the first half play because he was "making good defensive plays and was on the ball a lot offensively." Second Half "We controlled the ball the majority of the time during the final 15 minutes and all through the second half," Sundquist said. "We'd kick it down field and then win Muckers converge like bees to a hive on University player with the ball in the center of the pack. their lineout or control the .scrum. We played, a very defensive minded game." As in its last game against Utah State University the Muckers wore the University down in the first half and pulled out all stops in the second, dominating offensively offen-sively and defensively to The Muckers scored three limes in the second half on two trys by Doug Bodner and one by Shewmaker. Bodner's goals came from approximately five yards out. and via the Muckers control ling the scrums set there". ' Bodner scored his first goal when the Muckers wheeled the University squad to the left and left him nothing but daylight. His second goal came from somewhat of a broken play. Phaler went to pick the ball up from behind the scrum and a university scrum-half grabbed his arms, but the motion or throwing the ball still continued. Shewmaker tallied his goal from approximately 10 yards out. "1 he score was set up by the ; play of Rick Frye (dubbed Rick Sands last week because be-cause of a roster mixup). Frye unleashed a 40-yard kick to Utah's fullback and before the Ute fullback could respond with a kick of his own Frye had him covered like a cheap suit and blocked the kick. Shewmaker ended up with the ball and try. The Muckers have a two week break tentatively scheduled sche-duled before their next game. Sundquist said there was the possibility of a game on June 21 but arrangments were not finalized. ; t h .-V. - ' k ' -'4 jf v f - f ' : ,tr ; f ' ' . ,. ..." ... .... t. ... -. ... - .- . .. , ii ' u . ri 11 1 1 r 1 1 - , -nr Mucker Tom Lauder jumps high to control the lineout in Saturday afternoon action.
