Show EDITORIAL We're Impressed It seems at times that some achievements in athletics do not receive the recognition they deserve. Some sports are more popular than others football and basketball for example. Yet h is unfair, we feel, not to acknowledge and praise students in other sports who have done outstandings iobs in their respective fields. Following Saturday's state gymnastics meet in Richfield, Park City High School's girls gymnastics team placed first among 1-A schools in Utah. They finished fourth at the meet, but the first three schools are larger schools in class 2-A. When one considers how many 1-A schools there are in the state, this is quite an accomplishment. In her first year as coach of the team, Gail McBride has demonstrated her competence and teaching ability. Ten members of the team were eligible to compete in the state meet as a result of their impressive showing earlier at the region gymnastics meet. The Park High team won their three previous region meets during the regular season. Although it would certainly not come under the category of sports, a word should also be said regarding the high school forensics team, under the direction of Brenda Bensch. 11 members of the team went to the state forensics meet at Brigham Young University last week and finished tied for fifth place the first time they have ever placed on the state level. Students Wess Jolley and Kerri Gunderson took second place in their respective categories of competition. But we would not want to diminish the accomplishments made by other teams at Park City High School. The basketball team, which also went to state finals, completed one of the most impressive seasons in several years. Three members of the wrestling squad competed likewise in the state tournament Cory Provost, Cliff Martinez, and Steve Mann. Howard Davidson and Cathy Ulrich were named to all-region basketball teams. And the football team is under the direction of an experienced coach, recenlty hired from a large 4-A school. Their future looks promising. The tennis team, coached by David Chaplin and Harry Reed, jumped off to a winning start by beating Dugway last week. Best of luck to them in the matches ahead. When one considers how successful sports in Park City has been over the past few months, an eternal truth comes to mind hard work pays off. |
