Club Launches Swim Program A comprehensive swimming program is scheduled to begin at the Racquet Club in June which will be under the supervision of an experienced coach and administrator. admini-strator. Pete Carlston, who began the age-group swimming program pro-gram in 1953, has offered to begin the program here to help develop and train young swimmers into strong athletes. Pete Carlston has been involved involv-ed in coaching football, baseball, track, swimming and cross country at the University of Utah for many years. This is his 15th year as head track coach at the University. For the past 23 years, Carlston has run his own age group swimming program at his home in Salt Lake. Any interested Park City swimmers in Park City can participate in the summer program pro-gram which will last until the middle of August. Carlston said he plans to contact local parents in less than two weeks to determine how much interest there is to establish the swimming swim-ming program. Children as young as four can sign up and participants will be grouped according to age (six and under, eight and under, etc.). Swimmers will be grouped up to age 16. Park City will compete against groups from other areas, primarily primar-ily in Salt Lake and Utah County, Carlston said. "They all have to meet a certain standard," said Carlston. He added that on the first day of the program, everyone will go through tryouts to see if there are any swimmers ready for competition. competit-ion. Those not ready will be placed in a stroke development class. Practice will be six days a week at the Racquet Club pool. "These kids can get scholarships scholar-ships if they work hard," Pete Carlston said. Several athletes who were in Carlston's program in Salt Lake received college scholarships in swimming. Basic swimming strokes will be developed: back, butterfly, breast and crawl. The Park City swimmers will compete in swim meets once a week and swim against swimmers of similar age groups. "The first thing we want to do is get a good, aggressive age : group swimming program go-1 go-1 ing," said Carlston. Coach Carlston added he needed at least 30 kids to begin the program. Besides the swimming program Carlston said he would like to start a track program in Park City as well. "There's no better place to train for distance running than right here," said Carlston. The track program will start at the same time as swimming if there is enough interest in the community and as in the swimming program, there will be age-group track meets. |
