Show Rugby Team Defeats Highland The Park City Ruggers made it two in a row Saturday, beating Highland in Salt Lake 14 to 8, and remained undefeated with an early season 2-0 record. The Highland game was quickly scheduled last week in order to prepare the "Muckers" for the upcoming-rugby tournament tourna-ment at Utah State in Logan May 12, 13, and 14. Park City jumped off to an early 4-0 lead when veteran kicker Skip Schirf scored the first try of the day. The goal was missed and Park City led until Highland scored a try, missed the goal, and the game was deadlocked at 4-4. A three-point penalty goal by Schirf put Park City on top, but not for long as Highland scored their second try only minutes before the half. The first half ended with Highland holding onto a slim 8-7 lead. Both the "Muckers" and Highland had opportunities to score in the second half but neither could materialize, and so the score remained at 8-7 up until approximately 10 minutes left in the game. Skip Schirf scored his second try of the day, going in unopposed from a ruck close to the Highland line. The goal after try was missed again and Park City led 11-8. Shortly before the game ended, Bruce Reid converted on a penalty kick. Final score: Park City 14, Highland 8. "Highland was a different team," said Dave Mueller. "They were in real good condition and forced us to run. They didn't play top-flight rugby, although they covered the field well." 12 sides will compete at the Utah State tournament next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Park City's first home game is against University of Utah, May 27. "We'll have a lot of depth this year," Mueller said. |
