Show OGDEN PORTLAND ' CEMENT PLANT Wonderful Deposit of Marl and Clay, being Converted Into Commercial Commer-cial Cement, is Seen by a Large Number of O-jdenites Who Visited the Property in Automobiles Sunday. Ia response to an Invitation from the officers and directors of the O?-den O?-den Portland Cement company, the mayor, with several members of the city council and a large number of business men, assembled at tho Utah National bank corner yesterday morn-i ins: and a little later entered a score of automobiles and started for Brig-ham Brig-ham City to inspect the cement plant located adjacent to that thrltty little city. The twonty-two-mlle ride to the capital of rtox Cider county was thoroughly thor-oughly enjoyed by the guests of the company, and the visitors were then escorted from Brlgham City to the hi? cement plant and shown through that, modern establishment whllo ov-every ov-every department was In active oper I atlon and the finished product was on exhibition. Tho material used and for which this plant has become f am out;, consists con-sists of crry marl and clay, and the deposit was first discovered by II. C. Baker several years ago. The valuable valu-able deposit lfl formed by the Wa natch creel; flowing down through limestone and shale ledges from the great range of adjecent mountains, and the llmo Is deposited In tho form of marl In a basin at tho foot of tho canyon. Directly underneath Is found a p!aUc blue clay, and the marl carries from 83 to 84 per cent carbonate of lime, and about 12 per cent ellica, the latter lat-ter being In a finely divided state and all of It being susceptible of passing through a 200 mo.h screen fine enough to combine readily with the lime In a rotary ki'.n practice. The clay Is ot unknown depth and Is of very fine texture, all of It passing the 100 mesh screen, and is of excellent excel-lent quality for the manufacture of the bet quality of Portland cement. The marl, ns It comes from the bed. Is also exceedingly fine, so that they ran slurry from the tube mill, without any grinding, leaves a residue on a 100 mesh sieve of only about 5 per cent, and this In lime flakes. The fact that the materials are found so uniform, and with no foreign matter overlaying them, makes the excavating excavat-ing of the same a very simple proposition. propo-sition. The construction of the plar.t erected erect-ed to manufacture this rich material was commenced last July and operations opera-tions were inaugurated In January last. The plant Is operated by electricity elec-tricity secured principally from a power pow-er plant owned In Wasatch canyon. Additional power needed Is received from the city of Brlgham a distance of only seven miles. A 1000 volt alternating al-ternating current Is used and transform trans-form at the plant to 440 for Allls Chalmers motors. The raw material Is dumped Into the pug mills and pugged Into a stiff 85urry which contains when ready for burning 38 per cent water, nod Is handled by a patent air compressing pumping $ystera. Tho slurry from tho pug mills Is delivered Into preliminary pre-liminary tanks, which the chemist samples, and from these tauks Is ground through an Allls Chalmers tube mill to prove the mix as really no grinding Is necessary. From the tube mill the slurry Is pumped Into big storage tanks behind be-hind the kilns and from these tonka Is fed into the kilns. Kemmerer coal Is used, passing directly from the car6 to the Aero pulzerlzers without any preliminary preli-minary grinding, except to pass through a little crusher to take care of any lumps. The kllnker drops from the kilns into a Webster bucket conveyor, which delivers It in turn to a 36x64 inch rotary cooler built by the Allls ChaJnaer8 Co. which in turn delivers It to another bucket Webster conveyor. con-veyor. This elevates it to the hlna In the dry grinding. In the dry grinding the Sturtevant, ring roll mills are used. The cement is brushed Into an Allls Chalmers tube mill and Is elevated ele-vated to a belt conveyor which carries It through into the etoel: hous. ' All laboratory equipment Is patterned pat-terned after eastern laboratories and shops and the Brlgham City plant Is strictly up to date and thoroughly modern. The plant 1s located on the main line of the Oregon Short Line railroad rail-road and the company operates Its own locomotive for hauling 1n raw material ma-terial and handling cars on the side track.
