Dr. Charles Edward Stowo related 1o a Inrge number of wealthy members of the Church of tho Ascension last night how his mother came to write "Uncle Tom's Cabin," and when he concluded by saying that Mrs. Slowo's principal object in writing tho book j was to obtain sufficient money to found a negro education institution, In which she hod failed, the members of this Fifth avenue church agreed to start a j fund to carry out her project. I "My mother had always been deep- ly affected by tho stories of negro women slaves being separated from their babies by the auction sales and otherwise, and one day In church the shory of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' came to her as a vision." said Dr. Stowe. "After church she came home and wrote feverishly for several hours until un-til she had finished that best-known chapter, "The Death of Uncle Tom Others read it, and cried, and then her friends insisted that she should finish the story. "My mother made little money out of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin.' She received nothing for the foreign rights nor for the dramatization. She had hoped to make enough to start a school for negroes but the income was not sufficient." |
