In many Instances, the appointment of more men is Imperative to handle this work and to furnish better protection pro-tection against forest fires. If new rangers are appointed they will be, so far as possible, local men. familiar with the region in which thoy are to be employed, and fitted by practical experience for their duties. The biir provides for the appropriation appropria-tion of $G00,000 for permanent. Improvements Im-provements on tho national forests. This Includes the construction and maintenance of roads, trails, brlJgcs, fire lines, telephone lines, cabins, fences, fen-ces, etc. These Improvements arc necessary In the administration of the national forests and for their protection protec-tion from fires. They are also of tho greatest benefit to the localities in which the forests are situated, slnco they enable those living in and near the forests to mako greater uso of thir resources. In addition to the district benefits resulting to forest users from tho building of roads, trails, bridges, telephone tele-phone lines, etc., the construction of these Improvements results in larger sales of timber and other forest products, prod-ucts, thus Increasing the revenue of the service. According to law, 25 per cent of all money received from each national forest is paid to the state or territory in which the national forest is situated, to be expended for tho benefit of public schools and public roads In tho county or counties In which the national forest is located. It Is apparent that the house has recognized the Importance to the users of the national forc&ts, as well as to the country at large, of the work which is being carried on by the forest service, and has passed an increased appropriation that the work may bo extended. If the bill passed the son-ate son-ate every community in or near a national forest will be benefited by tho increased amount of money available for the development and administration administra-tion of the national forests. A copy of the bill making appropriations appropria-tions for the department of agriculture for the fiscal year ending Juno 30, 1910, has been received by the district forester for-ester a. Ogden. The bill as reported to the house of representatives by tho committee on agriculture, and as passed pass-ed by the house Thursday, provides for an appropriation of $4,646,200. or this amount !?4,O46.200 is for rent, supplies, freight and express charges, salaries, and other necessary expenses, and Is an increase of $750,000 for these purposes pur-poses over the amount appropriated last year. The Increased appropriation will enable en-able the forest service to omploy a larger number of forest rangers to patrol the national forostB.
