Show ATTEMPTED i AWFUL Discharged Workmen Try To Blow Up Borne of Superintendent. Oakland. Feb. 5. A dastardly attempt at-tempt was made by some discharged workman o fthe California Suear Re- fining company, owned by Spreckles &. Co., at Crockett, about 20 miles east of hero, In Contra 'Costa county, to destroy the home arid family of Superintendent Super-intendent Hugh Hartmnn, by dynamite, dyna-mite, which was placed under the front of the house at 3 o'clcq this morning and exploded. The whole front of the building was torn away and the sitting room exposed: Immediately in the rear of this were tho sleeping rooms of Mr. and Mrs. Hartman and their four children. The explosion aroused the entire town ard shattered windows In the neighborhood. Shortly after daylight, Constable Taylor and two other men started in pursuit of three suspects, whom they had located in a nearby cottage. The men fled and opened fire on the officers with revolvers. This fire the officers returned, and the chae wa kept up for more than an hour through the hills with very frequent exchanges of shots until the suspects surrendered. None of the participants was wounded. The prisoners were Identified as G. Bernovitch. G. Marisltch and II. Mar-istlch. Mar-istlch. Mr. Hartman is one of the best known capitalists . in Contra Co6ta county. There have been numerous labor difficulties there with the Slavonians, Slavon-ians, and this plot is believed to be an outcome of the many threats made against him. , |
