Show ASTOUNDING 'rep Big Steal in Public Lands Discovered by Secretary's Special Agents. Washington, Jan. 18. Startling Information In-formation of alleged astounding frauds upon the public lands has come Into the posBOsslon of Secretary Garfield through, special agents. The allegation allega-tion Is made that approximately $110,-000,000 $110,-000,000 worth of lands in states principally prin-cipally west of the Mlsslppl river 'nave, been fraudulently acquired within the last "two years by corporations and Individuals. With a view to recovering these lands, Secretary Garfield today sent letters to Chairman Hale and Chairman Chair-man Tawney of the senate and house appropriation committees respectively, asking for an additional appropi lation of $500,000, which if granted, with that already asked for will give the department de-partment SI, 000,000 for that purpose Secretary Garfield also submits a statement of H. H. Schwartz, chief of the field service, showing over 32,000 distinct cases of alleged land frauds demanding further Investigation. Of such cases awaiting Investigation there are In Oregon 1.4G2; California, ?.nd Nevada, 1,409; Washington and North Idaho, 1,325; Montana, 3,605; Colorado 8,621.
