United O O States Senator Reed Smoot was o O re-elected today, both houses O O voting In separate session. Sen- o O ator Smoot received his entire O O party strength. q O ooooooooooo At a joint caucus of the Republican members of the state legislature in Salt Lake last evening, President Gardner of the senate made a strong speech favoring the nomination of Hon. Reed Smoot for reelection to the United States senate; the nomination nomina-tion meeting with approval he ( was nominated by acclamation. As' soon as the vote was taken, a telegram was sent to Senator Smoot at Washington, advising him that he was the cholco of the Republicans of the present legislature for re-election to the United States, senate. The present stato legislature is made up of two Democrats Demo-crats and the balance Republicans, so that the caucus nomination of Senator Smoot means a nomination in both houses and it also meuns that when his name Is voted upon In the Joint session of the two houses at noon tomorrow to-morrow ho will receive every vote of tho legislature except two; these two votes are Democratlo and It Is surmised sur-mised that they will be cast for Samuel Newhouse for tho high office in question. At tho caucus last evening Senator Hlrschcl Bullen of Cache county and Representative Cannon of Salt Lake county desired to defer the nomination of Senator Smoot until he could be heard regarding tho prohibition question, ques-tion, which Is now a vexed one before the stdte solons. This idea, however, did not meet with a responsive chord from his fellow legislators, and Senator Sena-tor Smoot's nomination followed without with-out a dissenting vote. Forty-nine of the Republican legislators were pros-cut. pros-cut. The caucus was well attended, there being only, one absentee, Benner X. Smith of Salt Lake. E. Loose, and the Salt Lake county chairman of tho party, J. U. Eldredgo, Jr. All newspaper men were excluded exclud-ed from the meeting. - This afternoon at 2 o'clock, -when the two branches of the legislature meet In regular session' Senator Smoot will be formally nominated for the United States senate, 'the nominating nomi-nating speech in the senate to be made by Senator Carl A. Badger of Salt Lake county, and in the house Representative J. W. Wootton of Utah county will malao the nominating rpeech. Representative Orville Thompson of Millard county was electod chairman of the caucus last evening and Rep-! Rep-! resentativo E." C. Ash ton of Salt Lake I was elected secretary.
