Show MR. TROOP IS OFF TO JAIL ALLOWED SIXTY DAYS IN WHICH TO EXPLAIN. He Tried to Prove His Good Character but Failed to Impress the Judge. A Ries Carnival man, by the name of Charles L. Troop, drew a considerable consider-able amount of tlmo on the rock pile today as a result of his becoming en-tungled en-tungled with another man's grip at the union station. A traveler, who had set his grip down for a moment while waiting for a train, suddenly discovered his property prop-erty missing, and Officer Crompton, being close at hand, discovered Troop with the grip within a few minutes r.fter the alarm and arrested him. Troop was arraigned on tho charge of petit larceny and pleaded guilty on condition that he be allowed to "take the stand. Permission was granted, the results of which were more or less unexpected by the defendant. He stated stat-ed that ho had been working In tho railroad yards, and, In celebrating his discharge, from employment, proceeded proceed-ed to get drunk. He said he had purchased pur-chased a suit of clothes and a suit case, pajing $9 for the former and $1 for tho grip. When he got to the station his head was so befuddled that he mistook another's grip for his own, which resulted in his arrest. The defendant could not recall where he bought the clothing except t'nat It was somewhere on Twenty-f.fth Twenty-f.fth street. Nor did ho know where the clothing was at tho present time. The city attorney proceeded to investigate in-vestigate his history during tho past year. Detective Pender was called to the stand, also Officer Burke and Desk Sergeant Crltchlow. Each of the officers testified that Troop had been i'i jail last summer for threatening prospective purchasers of books which he was peddling, and had Indulged the officers in more or less fistic exercise while being arrested and locked up. Troop stated that there was some mistake, and proceeded to give a detailed de-tailed Itinerary of the Rels Carnival company from the time It opened in Washington until the show closed In I6.-j.hc Falls, He admitted being with the show during fair week in Ogden, but denied that he had ever been ar-resied ar-resied either here or elsewhere, Dt-spite the defendant's story and assertions, as-sertions, the testimony of the officers prevailed and the court sentenced Trccp to sixty days in jail, saying that the matter of stealing the grip was of more importance than his itinerary with, tho show or whether he had been arrested before in Ogden. and that filling fill-ing up with a lot of bad "booze" was :o excuse for meddling with other people's peo-ple's property. |
