Show GOFF CASE BECOMES SERIOUS McGUIRE AND ASSOCIATES ARE BOUND OVER. Dr. Belnap Cries When Placed on the Witness Stand Contradictory Evidence Bail Fixed at $500. The preliminary hearing of McGuire, Bramlett and Garrett, charged with the robbery of Frank Goff, was brought to a close today, each of the defendants defend-ants being bound over to the district court with ball fixed at $500. In giving his decision the court stated stat-ed that he considered the gravity of the affair as brought out through tho various witnesses as fully sufficient to justlfj him in holding the accused men to a higher court. A number of witnesses. wore examined exam-ined today, Including Bert Cody, "Slats" Rochelle and "Kelly"' Collins, who carried Goff upstairs while ho was in an unconscious condition. Another An-other star witness, Dr. Belnap. who had apparently been held back for several sev-eral days by the defense, was put on the stand and. upon being asked an unimportant question by the defendant's defend-ant's attorney, broke down and Bobbed like an hysterical child. The city physician phy-sician was called to attend h,in, after which he was taken to an ante-room and his testimony takon. Chief Clerk Jones, of the Utah Construction Con-struction Co., was called and told of Issuing to Frank Goff a check for $291 on tho day stated In tho testimony, the cancelled check being introduced as evidence and registered as an ex- The testimony of Dr. Belnap did not agree with that given by his colleague, Dr. Estes. The latter said that he went alono to attend Goff, while tho testimony of Dr. Belnap, as well as Mrs. Loveless, was to the effect that Dr. Belnap had accompanied E3tea apd was in tho room when Estes wrote the prescription. Belnap stated that Goff talked disconnectedly of having hav-ing money- enough to pay his doctor bill and afterward said he had been robbed of $290 In bills. $00 in gold and a gold, watch. Belnap wont down and asked about Coff'a money in view or insuring the payment of his bill, and McGuire said he did not know Goff nor anything about him. In regard to carrying Goff upstairs, former-witnesses said that Goff had tumbled over Jn front of tho bar and was-taken immediately up stairs, but another witness then stated that he had been called to assist and that ho had found Goff lying in a back room unconscious, tending to corroborate the story of Goff. |
