The conference was ar-j ar-j ranged to formulaic a wonting agree- ment lo take the place of ihe present one which expires .May 1. Officials met the men's demands with a proposal to submit the whole matter lo. arbitration but the delegation delega-tion said that they had no authority lo submit the question- in that way. Hcsides an Increase in wages for the carmen, shopmen and trackmen that would average a 53 per cent ad-; ad-; vance over the present scale, the men demand an eight-hour day in the ' shops and on the Hack, with as close i to an eight-hour day for platform men as is feasible. If men are called for extra work within two hours be-I be-I fore or after a regular shift, the demand de-mand is that they be paid at the rale of time and a half for s.u j work and also for the Interim between be-tween the regular and extra shifts. |
