Show SUMMER ' H PILL'OWS Now Is the Time to Make Them. H BY EDNA EGAN. fFSjlOR the housekeeper who is plan- II Wi mn or ncr summcr quarters it ijH I"--') is now time (o look over hcr,t jH supply of porch pillows, cull ll from the leftover collection the faded 'H ones and make new coverings. "You :H can't begin this important duty too IH Several things should be remembered !H concerning the colors and materials 'H which appear on the cushions of the out-doors living room, into which the ! American veranda has developed these ! last few years. In selecting its cush-ions cush-ions it can not be treated like an or-dinary or-dinary room, as the brilliant light has to be considered. H The adjacent lawn or garden, with its jH flower beds and shrubs, is seen in con-ncction con-ncction with the porch, so that the two jH must be planned together. Some per-sons per-sons before fitting out a porch com- IH plctcly with" cushions test samples of the cloth to sec if they will stand sunlight and water. Onc should never use hand-some hand-some embroidered or silk pillows on i the porth; comfojt, not elaborateness, should be the aim. The covers, if possible, should bc uni-form uni-form in material and color, with pos-sibly pos-sibly onc or two carefully chosen con-trasting con-trasting shades to avoid monotony. If the materials arc washable, two sets of removable covers arc made for con-vcnicncc con-vcnicncc in laundering. If a porch happens to be fitted in lf brown wicker furniture, covers of Hoi- wM laud linen with a monogram in a darker brown arc a good choice. Dark blue linen marked in white or a darker shade of blue makes decidedly smart covers for a porch which has the natural col-orcd col-orcd wicker furniture and blue jute rugs. Onc woman has laid in a supply of blue and white plaid gingham, with a finish of the wijd old-fashioned rick-rack, rick-rack, which she is planning to make up into pillow covers. Linen of a rich ecru finished with heavy dark blue nckrack braid would also be serviceable and effective. Some very successful coverings have been made from materials borrowed IH from thc kitchen, such as crash towel-hng towel-hng in the blue and red squares, and what is called German dish cloth or IH heavy hand-woven cotton, creamy in color. This peasant cloth when trimmed with an equally foreign looking red and blue cotton fringe is more than effee-tivc effee-tivc and worth while. Some house furnishers provide the porch seats with cushions covered with flowered cretonnes and serviceable chintzes, which arcv always attractive if there happens to be no adjacent garden with vivid colorings, but merely a vcl- IH vcty green lawn. tlH Cushions that arc supposed to be for real comfort on the veranda couch IH swing should not be of rough, scratchy IH material, but of some smooth goods, pleasant and cool for the face to rest against. |
