Show uu TRAIN SERVICE TO BEREDUCED Western Passenger Schedules to Be Curtailed One-third or More Schedules to Be Announced. WASHINGTON, March 2. Passenger Passen-ger train service in tho west will be reduced one -third or more by a rearrangement re-arrangement of schedules to be announced an-nounced shortly by Director General McAdoo. Scores of trains on competing lines leaving and arriving at terminals about the same lime will be eliminated. elimi-nated. Unnecessary trains on many lines arc to be taken off and the locomotives loco-motives and crews used for essential freight service. There is no thought, however, of making a few western lines the principal passenger carriers as contemplated in the east. Officials also stated that the reduction in schedules will not result in any serious ser-ious inconvenience to passengers. Gerritt Fort -Directing. . The curtailment, which has been un-' un-' der consideration for several weeks by Gerritt Fort, passenger traffic director for the railroad administration, administra-tion, will bo effective from the Mississippi Mis-sissippi river lo tho Pacific coast. In much of this territory traffic is comparatively com-paratively light and by a reduction of tho number of trains, railroad administration admin-istration officials believe they can save many millions of dollars and still provide ample facilities for all through travel to the coast. |
