Lucas took an examination early last spring and was passed into the government service as an architectural engineer, and was given the job of : supervising tho structural work on the war barracks at Fort Douglas, it is j said. He says after fighting for America he did not think it nocessary to go through the formality of taking out papera of citizenship. Lucas is 72 years old, unmarried, has no relatives in Salt Lake, and before be-fore coming to Salt Lake last July, it is said, had been a resident of Los Angeles, Cal. In filling out his examination papers to obtain the federal position of architectural archi-tectural engineer, which he held up to the time of his arrest, it is believed he falsified in regard to his age, and It is believed, although papera were not obtainable yesterday, that ho falsified fal-sified In regard to his nationality. He has said he was born in San Antonio, Tex., but confessed to Mr. Smyth, yesterday he had been born in Germany in 1845. Ho denied, however, how-ever, reports he had made pro -German remarks of an incendiary nature. Leniency Expected. Although a great many tunnels have been discovered leading from tho war barracks, federal officials say Lucas has had no opportunity cither to take part in the digging of them, or, as it was rumored, to have known of their existence and winked at the work. Because of his past record in the service of the United States, it is believed be-lieved some leniency will be extended him in the matter of possible Internment. Intern-ment.
