Show Five Million Children Being Organize for Summer" and Fall Work. 40,000 TEACHERS LEAD Cardinal Gibbons Promises Participation by the Parochial Paro-chial Schools of Country. i WASHINGTON, March 7. Formation Forma-tion of the "United States garden army," with .a membership of 5,000,-000 5,000,-000 children and having for its purpose pur-pose the supplying of the family of each member with vegetables, small frutis and eggs during the summer and fall, was announced today by the department of thc interior. The department de-partment is organizing children in cities, cit-ies, towns, villages and suburban homes, while tho department of agriculture agri-culture is doing the same work with the children of the farming districts. The children will be in charge of 40,000 teachers and there will bo four or five general superintendents in charge of the country in which It is to be divided. There will be competition competi-tion contests in which honors, prizes nnd distinctions will bo given to thc winners. Members will be permitted to display the insignia of the new servico "U. S. G. A." I American officials and dignitaries from President Wilson down are taking tak-ing an interest in the plan. Cardinal Gibbons has answored for the participation partici-pation of the parochial schools. It is planned to make the garden army a continuing process. Every generation gen-eration of children will be brought into the army as soon as they reach a certain age. "How broad the scope of the enterprise enter-prise of bringing the children Into their country's servico is, ma be gauged from the rough estimates of what they will accomplish," says the announcement, "The food they will produce, translated Into terms of money, would duplicate our airship program, or on the navy side it would reproduce all tho destroyers and sub-marin sub-marin chasers we are sending to blow tho U-boats- out of the sea. If Hurley had tho spending of it, it would produce pro-duce 800 splendid cargo ships." |
