Show REVENUE DISTRICT MAY J8E FORMED SALT LAKE, April 25 By reason of the enormously heavy income, corporation cor-poration and excess profits taxes collected col-lected in Utah and Idaho, these states are entitled to classification as one: Internal revenue district and to be! divorcer! irom the Montana district 1 according to David A. Gates, deputy 1 commissioner of internal revenue, who1 spent a few hours in this city yesterday yester-day en route from the north to Los Angeles. While Mr. Gates said yesterday that he was not in a position to discuss the matter or to lend any encouragement encourage-ment to the proposition, he said that, there was no question that the income tax collections of Utah and Idaho were more than sufficiently large to warrant the passage of an act by congress authorizing the creation of a new internal revenue district to include in-clude the two states. "The people of the west have shown their patriotism and loyalty to a marked degree in making their returns and paying their income taxes," said Mr. Gates yesterday, "and tho aggregate aggre-gate of the income corporation and excess profits taxes will run far beyond be-yond expectations. "Throughout the country the field forces are being organized to ferret out the delinquents or 'slackers,' and no effort will be spared to bring those who have failed to make their returns to account The work of apprehending apprehend-ing them will be systematic, and there will be few who will escape "Complete lists of those liable for the payment of the income tax are now being prepared at Washington from information furnished from each district, and these lists will be segregated segre-gated into states and districts and finally into zones. Field agents in the various zones are now familiarizing themselves with local conditions, and while it may be months before any reports concerning delinquents will be available, they will be made as soon as possible, and those who have failed to comply with tbe law will be brought to a realization of their faults." ro I |
